Each month, PocketGamer.biz and Stream Hatchet analyze the impact of mobile games and esports on streaming platforms; the ebb and flow of the most popular titles including Free Fire, PUBG Mobile and Clash Royale, and pioneering newcomers; and how they reach their audience.
Today, Upstream presents data from April 2022, which shows mobile game viewership remaining flat, and a comparison of the most popular mobile genres by download and how they contrast with top streams.
There’s still no change in the top 10 most streamed mobile games, but the current leader, Mobile Legends Bang Bang, saw its viewership increase by 21%, largely thanks to the main event of mobile esports, Mobile Legends Pro League Indonesia S9, which received over 14.5 million hours watched and at its peak reached one million concurrent viewers.
Encouragingly, after months of fluctuating viewership, hours watched remained stable; registering only a decrease of 0.6%.
Youtube Gaming and Facebook Gaming continue to be the most popular streaming services, with Twitch viewership still dwindling – although its audience is clearly fans of Supercell: it’s the only platform Clash Royale was on. most streamed mobile game.
As detailed above, this month has been dominated by Mobile Legends Pro League Indonesia S9, and with Arena of Valor’s RoV Pro League 2022 Summer unable to exceed one million hours watched or peak concurrent viewers, the Overall mobile esports viewership has shrunk by 65%.
While integral to many gamers’ relationship with gaming, the most popular genres for streaming and esports differ significantly from the most popular mobile genres. Casual games – defined by data.ai as hypercasual, puzzle, arcade and “other” – take up 78% of global downloads, while basic games account for more than 96% of the streaming audience.
